Where does a young adult even begin when it's time to move out? Randie Donald, age 21 and looking for her first apartment, had the same question and got a lot of answers watching Apartment Hunt. Here is what she had to say about this interactive animated curriculum: When moving out for the first time, there are so many things to do and to worry about, it's hard to imagine everything, and it may seem overwhelming. It's not only the big things, but the all the little things that you might overlook that play a big part in living on your own. Apartment Hunt is an entertaining and very informative way to help you get organized. It helps you figure out not just the big things, but also brings all of the little details to your attention, helping you plan your move from beginning to end. The first time you're on your own, it's difficult to really know what to expect; it seems like you don't realize a lot of things you needed to do until the second you actually need them. In fact, it's hard to know even where to start. Apartment Hunt walks you through the before, during, and after process of moving out on your own. You'll follow two young people (well, they're cartoon characters of course) throughout their move; you can interact with pretty much everything they're doing, and they give real world examples which make it easy to relate to. You start off figuring out the basics - what you'd like to have in an apartment, such as a laundry room or a pool, and what things you would prefer not to have - such as the top floor, etc. Then they help you narrow it down by what you actually need versus what you want. The program stops so you can create and print your own "needs and wants list." Budgeting money is going to be very important while you are on your own, but it's hard to learn until you're actually out there. Apartment Hunt gives several examples on how to manage your funds and helps you think through money decisions. You even get the opportunity to calculate your own budget to give you an idea on how much you'll need each month for all your bills, and how much you can spend on yourself. Again, you have to stop and make up your own budget ' after you watch each roommate give an example of how she did it. Then it walks you through the process of searching for your apartment, gives funny examples about what to look for, and provides a complete list of questions you can print out that you may want to ask when you're checking out potential apartments. It even covers how to fill out a rental application, making things much easier to understand. You can make up some "info cards" so you'll have all your references with you when you're filling out rental applications.
Apartment Hunt was very helpful and thorough, and I definitely feel like I know more of what to expect, and I feel much more comfortable going through the whole moving process than I did before. -Caesar Pacifici Ph.D. |
