The second in a three-part Foster Parent College (FPC) series on positive parenting, Positive Parenting 2 takes the viewer step-by-step through the process of setting limits for children and then through the development and implementation of a behavior contract. Positive Parenting 2 builds on parenting skills developed in the first part of this series. Positive Parenting 1 sets the stage with strategies for gaining children's cooperation, tracking their behavior and encouraging positive behavior through encouragement. This course covers two more positive parenting strategies that are must haves: Setting Limits and Behavior Contracts. Parents learn how to set rules and communicate them to their children without falling into the common traps of nagging and being inconsistent. Using group discussions with foster and adoptive parents, Dr. Rick Delaney -- clinical psychologist, author and lecturer -- guides the viewer through several true life situations most parents have encountered. Scenarios showing parents modeling the techniques are coupled with concrete steps viewers can use to apply the skill in their own homes. Developing and implementing behavior contracts provides strategies that can be used with children of all ages, from preschool through high school. Defining and presenting a behavior contract, identifying objectives, selecting rewards and monitoring compliance are all covered by Dr. Delaney in a way that helps parents stay consistent and positive. These strategies not only work, but respect the differences of individuals as common goals and understanding are reached. Reproducible handouts include a blank behavior contract and step-by-step instructions on how to use it effectively. This helpful tool allows parents keep the contract simple and positive. Parents will find it a valuable companion to artwork and report cards already found on the refrigerator door. Many foster and adoptive children come from chaotic worlds -- from unstable families incapable of setting reasonable limits and providing structure and security. The skills taught in this proactive FPC course will go a long way toward helping parents provide their children clear expectations, a consistent environment and a sense of how to fit into their new family. While originally developed for foster, kinship and adoptive parents, FPC's Positive Parenting courses would be beneficial for any parent who wants to create a more positive, nurturing, consistent home environment. — Ginger Gorham, M.S.
