One out of five teenagers becomes depressed as a result of serious school, family or social problems. In some cases, these teens become suicidal. For some youngsters, feeling they are a social outcast or an academic failure can precipitate depression. For others, it may stem from questions about sexual identity, an inability to live up to parental expectations, or the death of a loved one.

With the guidance of a counselor, real middle school students talk about depression triggers, symptoms and treatment of teen depression, as well as the warning signs of and myths about suicide. The use of alcohol and other drugs as "self-medication" is explored.
